What is a Responsible Coach?
A responsible coach is someone who exhibits a high level of coaching competence, achieves and maintains excellence on the field, demonstrates an ongoing commitment to the well-being and development of athletes off the field, and honors and respects the game.

Responsible coaching actually is more difficult, challenging and rewarding than coaching with a “win-at-all-cost” approach. In addition to learning all you can about your sport while honing your x’s and o’s and competing fiercely for wins, you also are committed to a number of more important ideals:

  • Ensuring player safety
  • Placing education and character development before wins
  • Coaching beyond the x’s and o’s
  • Coaching athletes to make them fun sports
  • Filling “emotional tanks” to improve performance and instill love of the sport
  • Living and coaching by a code of “Honoring the Game”

South Carolina Youth Soccer’s 2007 Girl’s Coach of the Year is just such a person. He has coached the Hampton-Varnville Storm girl’s team for over eight years; he encourages the kids to aim higher; he has taken girls to college camps for training; and he encourages the girls to take risks by playing positions out of their comfort levels. These girls look up to him.

The first time Wendy Jarrell met Barry and was inquiring about soccer for her daughter, he kept going on and on about his girls. Later when she asked him how many daughters he had … he said none!. He was referring to his soccer team. Barry is also the President of the Hampton-Varnville club and holds an advanced regional “D” license. If there is ever an opportunity to further his soccer knowledge he is there. He is an outstanding coach and leader in the community. He truly loves soccer, and without him in the club many things would not happen for the kids.

That is why Barry Whittington was name the Liberty Mutual Responsible Coach of the Year for South Carolina. This honor comes with a cash prize for the club of Barry’s choice!

Congratulations Barry!

Soccer for Life - A Letter
Being a military family we moved from state to state frequently — soccer became the common thread for our children. Being able to join a team — whether it was U6 or U18, recreation or classic — soccer gave my children a place to be accepted and to make friends.

Most importantly, we never worried about what level they played or whether there would be a college scholarship involved, we simply let them play. We travelled frequently to tournaments and games in and out of state, which gave us a chance to bond as a family (wasn't always easy with the husband away for months at a time). Many holidays were spent playing soccer and trying to figure out how to get one player to Atlanta while the other was in Charlotte. Yet we managed to do this as a family.

By getting involved myself, I made many friends throughout the soccer community — friends you could count on when things were good or bad. I found that by volunteering I received as much as I gave. My children competed with different clubs and schools at different levels. As they got older, soccer provided friendships that continued. One child played at the college club level and travelled to different states and colleges while making lifelong friends. He still plays soccer (indoor and out) as often as he can, and his best friends are ones he made while playing soccer. The other child now has her own child playing soccer and hopefully will experience the same rewards I did by being a part of the soccer experience.

So when your child plays soccer, make the most of it — volunteer, travel, and let the kids have fun.

That makes soccer a sport for life.

Inspect Soccer Goals
Inspect all soccer goals, soccer fields, grounds and equipment used by your organization to ensure that your club is in compliance and will remain in compliance throughout the seasonal year with all safety guidelines covered on the Soccer Goal/Field Inspection Form.

Every time a coach steps on the soccer field, it is the responsibility of that coach to ensure that the fields are safe to play on and that the goals are properly secured.

Hotel Safety
With so many teams traveling to out of town tournaments, it is important to consider some basic safety precautions while staying at hotels. Review the safety brochure by Pullen Insurance Services and share this information with your parents, team managers and coaches. The safety of our children is very important to all of us.>>MORE
