Coaching Tips from Van Taylor

POSSESSION - LOSS OF POSSESSION BY DESIGN

As a team we are prepared to lose possession in the following manner.

1. Shots on goal/goals scored - It is our goal to make the ball go dead on every entry into the final third of the field, and in priority order gain a goal, corner, or goal kick.
2. Defensive clearances which will be high and long.
3. Probing passes. Passes made knowing that possession may be lost but can be regained in a dangerous area of the field.

LOSS OF POSSESSION NOT BY DESIGN

It is important that we recognize the value of possession and that both individually and as a team we will do our utmost to ensure that the ball is retained.

1. Robbed in possession
2. Passes intercepted or knocked out of bounds.
3. Law infringements, offside, needless free kicks in dangerous areas.
4. Poor ball control.
5. Poor dribbling ability/dribbling choices. Includes maintaining possession while running with the ball.
