SC Youth Soccer State Cup Results
Region III President's Cup is Overwhelming Success! Last weekend SC Youth Soccer and Carolina Elite Soccer Academy (CESA) hosted the US Youth Soccer Region III President’s Cup at CESA’s MeSA complex and in Greenville and the event was an overwhelming success. See Video Report: CLICK HERE Tournament Director, Pearse Tormey and the entire staff of CESA had all 16 fields beautifully prepared and ready to go for the 114 teams representing each State Association in Region III, who were eager to begin the 3 day competition. The event started with a Parade of States held at the BI-LO center in Greenville, SC and all of the teams making an entrance into the arena for an opportunity to meet new friends and exchange souvenirs with other teams; what a great way to get the tournament started. The weather couldn’t have been much better for the 3 day event, with only a 30 minute weather delay on Saturday afternoon followed by a brief shower which helped cool everyone off. This event marked the first time in 14 years that SC Youth Soccer has hosted a Region III event, and CESA made certain the tournament ran smoothly and that everyone enjoyed themselves right up to the final competition and awards ceremony on Sunday afternoon. FANTASTIC – WONDERFUL - BEAUTIFUL, were just a few of the superlatives being used by parents and player to describe the MeSA complex. The tournament ran without a hitch and before you knew it everyone was heading back home on Sunday afternoon. It was a great experience to be there and participate in the Region III President’s Cup.
2009 Southern Region III Results South Carolina Teams bring home the gold U18 Boys - Discoveries 90 Green Discoveries open the final day at Region III by beating Norcross Gold from Georgia 5-1. Enzo Martinez found the back of the net twice for DSC 90 Green (SC) in their victory over 91 Norcross Fury Gold (GA) in the Under-18 Boys final. Martinez first scored in the 48th minute and added a second goal in the 83rd for DSC, who also got goals from George Khoury, Andrew Gorospe and Ralph Lundy. Discoveries went undefeated and scored 28 goals and allowed only seven for the tournament. CESA 92 Premier (SC) waited until the first 3 minutes in the overtime of their Under-16 Boys final with Dallas Texans 93 Red (N-TX) to find the back of the net. However, Ricardo Garbanzo didn't just put CESA ahead with one goal, he gave them some extra breathing room by adding a second. Garbanzo's first goal was in the 81st minute and his second came two minutes later. CESA beat the defending Region III champions 2-0. Both Discoveries and CESA will be headed to the National Youth Soccer Championship in Lancaster, Mass July 21-26 where they will play the Champions from the other 3 regions. South Carolina has never had more than one team at the National Championships. Spring 2009 Season - Challenge Cup Champions
SC Youth Soccer Celebrates First National Champion Team in 2009
Only four South Carolina teams have ever qualified for the US Youth Soccer National Championships, two of which qualified this year (Under-18 Boys DSC 90 Green and Under-16 Boys CESA 92 Premier). DSC had gone undefeated through state and regional championships and was an offensive force in the National Championship round robin scoring 15 goals. Standing in their path to the historic title for South Carolina was returning national qualifier Javanon 91 (KY). Enzo Martinez scored for DSC 90 Green in the 7th minute off a serve from teammate Crayton Benson for the 1-0 lead. Just before half, it was Benson again on the assist, this time to Juan Velasquez in the 44th minute for the 2-0 DSC lead. Javanon’s Vinicius Paiva would cut the DSC lead in half in the 50th minute (2-1). The South Carolina defense would hold and go on to claim the state’s first title with the 2-1 DSC win. Third Place Finish Shows SC Youth Soccer's Dominance

President's Cup a Success! Columbus, GA June 12th – 15th 2008 The fun began at Opening Ceremonies Thursday with the parade of States. All of the South Carolina teams represented the state with grandeur. As each South Carolina team was presented you could see and feel the pride in representing their club and state. It was wonderful to watch the teams swap pins, beads, patches, shirts and more. I can’t remember an event where such joy and charisma was present. The parents, players, coaches and SC Youth Soccer state representatives loved it. The heat index was at "code red" throughout most of cup play. It was very helpful that flags were flown showing the heat index throughout the tournament. The South Carolina teams showed well but didn’t make it to the finals. All the games were very competitive. SC Youth Soccer was named as the host State Association for the 2009 Region III President's Cup. The Carolina Elite Soccer Academy (CESA) will host this Regional Tournament at their Mesa Complex in June of 2009. State Cup Success! Running around was not just a characteristic of South Carolina's best soccer players this past weekend ... the volunteers who came together for another successful State Cup weekend also completed an amazing race! With so many venues to cover and so many games, it was crucial that the Cup run like clockwork. The referees performed with professionalism and the Columbia United volunteers were willing and ready to assist at the fields in anyway possible. Many thanks goes to all the positive contributions made.
President’s Cup Region III Tournament During June 8-10, 2007 several South Carolina players, coaches, parents and siblings traveled to Tampa, Florida to participate in this tournament. The boys’ matches were played at the Ed Radice Soccer Complex while the girls’ matches were played at the University of Southern Florida Soccer Complex. Over 20,000 players attended this event. Initially two teams, one boy’s and one girl’s, from each state were invited. Region III consists of these states: Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Tennessee, Mississippi, South Carolina, North Carolina, Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, North Texas and South Texas. State Representatives from only four of those states were present: South Texas, Florida, North Carolina and South Carolina. These state Board of Directors are there to aid their state teams in any way possible during the tournament. South Carolina had a boys and girls team in each U13, U14, U15, U16, and U17 division. Our scores were competitive with all of the states that we played - even the big states! Players, coaches, and parents displayed lots of spirit and good sportsmanship even though the weather tried to put a damper on the games. After many lightning delays we had two teams, the U13 girls Aiken Fireballs and the U17 boys Summerville 89 Blue that advanced to the semi-finals. With both teams playing their hearts out, the U17 boys Summerville 89 Blue advanced to the finals. Then on Sunday the finals were held with Summerville paired with South Texas. What a match! Each team had a fair share of chances but in the end South Texas came out on top with a 4-0 result. I can’t let this opportunity go by without telling everyone what a great job they did for South Carolina Youth Soccer! Michele Jenkins (Piedmont District Commissioner), Sharon Bieber (Mid-state Commissioner), and Jane Simmons (State Registrar) were delighted to represent SC Youth Soccer and our teams during this event.
