The Region III Boys ODP has recently implemented important changes

1. The creation of a new position of ‘Region III Technical Director’ whose role is to focus on the technical aspects of the program and apply more player development components into region camp and region pool events.
2. Every year the region invites foreign teams to camp to provide international competition and a global flavor for our players. Our players need more exposure to the international game to fully develop and they can now get it both at region camp and when invited to region team trips abroad.
3. The implementation of a region wide playing system and training standard. All our Region Teams and State Teams will follow the US Soccer playing style of 4-3-3 and training curriculum. Each region camp will have a theme and all the states and pool games will be trained on the thematic topic. In this way, all the players at camp benefit from the experience and leave camp with more knowledge, having learned how to play their position within a possession oriented system in accordance with the US Soccer philosophy.
4. The creation of a Region III Coaching Manual that ensures consistent training of the highest standards and best practices for all State and Region Teams.
5. The camp schedule and format will integrate all camp activities for optimal instruction, from the morning games, to the afternoon lectures, late afternoon training sessions and pool games at night. The objective is for everyone, not just those who get selected to the region pools, to benefit and grow as soccer players.

ODP players who come from states that don’t have any US Soccer Development academy clubs, as well as players who come from clubs that are not part of the US Soccer Development Academy will benefit in many ways from these new changes. The ODP training curriculum will expose them to unique training methods. The ODP is a true player development environment where game results really are secondary and individual player development is the overriding goal. The ODP doesn’t have to deal with the pressures to win that exist in club soccer and our state and region staff can focus their attention on purely developmental aspects of the game. And lastly, quality players from states such as OK, AR, MS, LA, AL, and TN and players from the non-academy clubs in FL, GA, NC, SC, STX, and TX have a much better chance of being selected to the region pools than in the past.

Please feel free to contact your state association’s Technical Director if you have any questions about ODP. We look forward to seeing you at Region Camp.

South Carolina Youth Soccer, US Youth Soccer and Axon Sports Providing Free Concussion Baseline Tests.

South Carolina Youth Soccer in partnership with US Youth Soccer is proud to offer every player in the US Youth Soccer Olympic Development program, cognitive Baseline testing for best-practice concussion management.

Concussions are at the forefront of sports conversations today. And soccer players aren’t immune. Collisions with other players put our athletes at risk of head injuries every day. In fact, the CDC reports that one in 10 athletes will suffer a concussion this year and the rates continue to climb for soccer. The sport has the highest rate for concussions in high school sports.

South Carolina Youth Soccer and US Youth Soccer are committed to the health and safety of our players and have found an accessible and affordable tool. Axon Sports offers an online test that will give you, your doctor and our staff another tool to help evaluate concussions and safely manage return-to-play decisions.

We recommend every player create an account at Axon Sports and take a Baseline test. The test measures current cognitive performance—or brain function. It's a snapshot in time of processing speed, working memory, attention, and accuracy. It is not an IQ test and poses no risk to your child. The four online tasks feature playing cards which create a game-like style and are universally understood regardless of language or age. An athlete’s commitment is limited to eight to 10 minutes of their time and best effort. Results are available immediately.

US Youth Soccer is very excited about providing this opportunity for our athletes. We strive to provide the highest level of safety and believe this is another step in the right direction. Despite the increase in awareness, concussions are still difficult to diagnose and determine full recovery. The most common error by coaches, parents, and athletes is to return to practice and competition too soon. This tool can be an important step in protecting the long-term health of your son or daughter.
